Job Purpose
The WASH Specialist will provide critical technical expertise and strategic guidance on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions, with a specific focus on cholera and other Public Health Emergencies (PHE). This role is instrumental in supporting UNICEF Country Offices and implementing partners to enhance their preparedness, response, and prevention capacities for WASH-related diseases. The Specialist will offer direct technical assistance, contribute to the development and implementation of robust WASH programmes, and foster effective partnership coordination. By leveraging expertise within the Centre of Excellence, the position will significantly contribute to achieving UNICEF's WASH, Humanitarian, and Resilience priorities, including supporting the implementation of the Pandemic Fund and ensuring the delivery of high-impact WASH interventions in complex emergency contexts globally.
Responsibilities
Provide global technical leadership and strategic guidance on WASH in emergencies, focusing on cholera and other PHE, to UNICEF Country Offices and partners. Develop and disseminate evidence-based guidelines, tools, and best practices for WASH preparedness, response, and prevention in emergency settings. Support Country Offices in conducting needs assessments, developing integrated WASH strategies, and designing high-impact WASH programmes, particularly in response to outbreaks and humanitarian crises. Facilitate and coordinate capacity building initiatives for UNICEF staff and partners on WASH in emergencies, including technical training and knowledge sharing. Strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders, including governments, UN agencies, NGOs, and the private sector, to ensure effective coordination and collaboration on WASH interventions. Contribute to the development and implementation of the Pandemic Fund strategy, ensuring alignment with broader WASH and humanitarian goals. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of WASH interventions in emergency contexts, providing recommendations for improvement and adaptation. Represent UNICEF in relevant inter-agency coordination forums and technical working groups related to WASH and public health emergencies. Stay abreast of emerging trends, research, and innovations in WASH and PHE, and integrate them into UNICEF's global strategies and country-level support.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of professional experience in WASH programming, with at least three years in emergency or humanitarian contexts. Experience in cholera preparedness and response is highly desirable.
