Job Purpose
The Senior Education Consultant, Foundational Learning will serve as the project officer within the Department of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (ESTI) at the African Union Commission for a Gates Foundation grant project focused on education advocacy in Africa. The role involves providing advice and technical assistance to ESTI on operationalizing foundational learning within the Continental Education Strategy for Africa 2026-2035. The consultant will support effective investment by AU Member States in foundational literacy and numeracy, aiming to improve learning outcomes and reduce learning poverty. Responsibilities are confined to activities directly implemented by ESTI, ensuring alignment with broader AU priorities and long-term sustainability.
Responsibilities
The Senior Education Consultant will be responsible for supporting and advancing the implementation of the education advocacy in Africa project phase. A key function will be to lead the implementation of the ELPAf Campaign. The consultant will provide essential technical support and guidance to Member States on Foundational Learning and Numeracy (FLN). This includes coordinating activities and representing the project in relevant forums. The role requires ensuring alignment with broader AU priorities, statutory processes, and long-term sustainability considerations. The consultant will work under the operational supervision of the Head of Education Division (ESTI) at the African Union Commission, with technical guidance from the UNICEF Representative to the African Union and UNECA. Detailed duties and tasks are outlined in the Terms of Reference (ToR).
Work Experience
At least 8 years of experience in Education Policy and Program planning at a continental context. Demonstrated experience in teaching and working in international organizations in Africa. Prior experience with the African Union or the UN is advantageous. Experience in project management and advocacy in Foundational learning is an added advantage.
