Job Purpose
The Protection Intern will support the UNHCR Kenya Country Office in its mission to protect refugees and stateless persons. This role involves assisting in the implementation of protection activities, including registration, case management, and community-based protection initiatives. The intern will contribute to ensuring that the rights and well-being of persons of concern are upheld, in line with international refugee law and UNHCR standards. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in humanitarian protection work within a dynamic and challenging environment, contributing directly to the lives of vulnerable populations.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of a Protection Officer or Associate, the Protection Intern will assist in various protection-related tasks. This includes supporting the registration and documentation of refugees and asylum-seekers, maintaining accurate case files, and ensuring data confidentiality. The intern will also contribute to the monitoring of protection needs and risks within refugee communities, participating in field visits and needs assessments as required. Assisting in the organization and facilitation of community-based protection activities, such as information sessions and focus group discussions, will be a key responsibility. The intern may also support the referral of vulnerable individuals to specialized services, such as health, education, or psychosocial support. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the preparation of protection reports, briefing notes, and other relevant documentation. The intern will also be expected to stay informed about protection policies and guidelines, and to contribute to a safe and inclusive working environment.
Work Experience
No prior work experience is required, but relevant volunteer experience or internships in humanitarian settings or protection-related fields are considered an asset.
