Job Purpose

The UNHCR Hired Lawyer position in Birjand, Iran, is designed to provide essential legal support and services to refugees and asylum-seekers. The role involves offering legal advice, assistance with asylum procedures, and representation in legal matters to ensure the protection of their rights and access to justice. This position is crucial for upholding UNHCR's mandate of ensuring international protection for refugees and finding durable solutions for their situations. The lawyer will play a key role in navigating the complex legal frameworks governing refugees in Iran, advocating for their rights, and contributing to the overall well-being and protection of vulnerable populations.

Responsibilities

The UNHCR Hired Lawyer will be responsible for providing comprehensive legal assistance to refugees and asylum-seekers. This includes conducting legal consultations, advising individuals on their rights and obligations under national and international refugee law, and assisting them in preparing and submitting asylum applications and appeals. The lawyer will also represent refugees in administrative and judicial proceedings, ensuring their voices are heard and their cases are fairly considered. Furthermore, the role entails conducting legal research on relevant national legislation and case law, and preparing legal opinions and reports. The lawyer will contribute to the development and implementation of legal assistance strategies, participate in training sessions for staff and partners, and maintain accurate case records. Collaboration with government authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to advocate for the rights of refugees and promote adherence to international protection standards will be a key aspect of the role. The lawyer will also identify protection gaps and advocate for policy changes to improve the legal status and protection of refugees.

Work Experience

A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in refugee law, human rights law, or related fields is required. Experience working with vulnerable populations or in a humanitarian context is desirable.
