Job Purpose
The Protection Intern (Translation) will support UNHCR's protection activities by providing crucial translation services. This role is vital for ensuring effective communication between UNHCR staff, persons of concern, and other stakeholders. The intern will translate documents, facilitate communication during interviews and meetings, and contribute to the accurate dissemination of information related to protection concerns. By bridging language barriers, the intern will directly contribute to UNHCR's mandate of protecting refugees and other persons of concern, ensuring their rights are upheld and their voices are heard. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in humanitarian protection work within a dynamic international organization.
Responsibilities
Provide accurate and timely translation and interpretation services for protection-related documents, interviews, focus group discussions, and meetings. This includes translating official UNHCR documents, legal texts, personal testimonies, and public information materials from the required languages into English and vice versa. Facilitate communication between protection officers and persons of concern during registration, interviews, and counseling sessions, ensuring that information is conveyed clearly and accurately. Assist in drafting and editing translated materials, ensuring adherence to UNHCR's terminology and style guidelines. Support the protection team by translating urgent communications and ensuring that information reaches beneficiaries in their own language. Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity when handling personal information and protection cases. Contribute to the development of translation resources and glossaries as needed. Assist in monitoring and reporting on language-related challenges within protection activities. Ensure that all translation activities are conducted in a manner that respects the dignity and rights of persons of concern. Support the team in any other translation or interpretation tasks as required to facilitate the effective delivery of protection services.
Work Experience
Previous experience in translation or interpretation, preferably in a humanitarian or international organization setting, is an asset. Familiarity with legal or protection terminology is desirable.
