Protection Assistant
Organizational Context
The Protection Assistant supports the protection unit in designing comprehensive protection strategies and ensuring timely, effective responses for persons of concern. The role involves liaising with local authorities and partners, and facilitating the involvement of persons of concern in decisions affecting them, building effective interfaces with communities, authorities, and partners.
Job Purpose
The Protection Assistant provides essential functional and administrative support to the protection unit, focusing on protection-related liaison, correspondence, monitoring, case management, and reporting. A key aspect of the role is to assist in developing a comprehensive protection strategy and ensuring high-quality, timely, and effective protection responses for persons of concern (PoC). This involves external liaison with local authorities and partners under supervisor guidance, and crucially, facilitating the active participation of PoC in decision-making processes that impact their rights and problem-solving. Building and maintaining strong relationships with communities of concern, local authorities, and protection partners is vital for achieving these objectives and ensuring the rights and well-being of those UNHCR serves.
Responsibilities
Consistently apply International and National Law, along with applicable UN/UNHCR and IASC policy, standards, and codes of conduct. Observe and respect protection-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Provide functional and administrative support for all protection-related AGD (Age, Gender, Diversity) based programming with implementing and operational partners. Support the implementation of participatory approaches, needs assessments, monitoring, reporting, and case management activities. Assist in assessments for durable solutions, including voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement where appropriate. Facilitate liaison with competent authorities for the issuance of personal and other relevant documents. Assist in drafting reports, routine correspondence, updating relevant databases, and compiling statistics within the Area of Responsibility (AoR). Select PoC for preliminary interviews and determine relevant information to share. Uphold integrity in the delivery of protection services by local implementing partners. Support the identification and management of risks, seeking opportunities that impact objectives in the area of responsibility, ensuring risk-based decision-making. Raise risks, issues, and concerns to a supervisor or relevant colleagues. Perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
1 year of relevant experience with a High School Diploma.
