Job Purpose

The Protection Fellow will contribute to UNHCR's mandate by supporting the protection of refugees and other persons of concern. This role involves assisting in the implementation of protection activities, ensuring that the rights and well-being of displaced populations are upheld. The fellow will work under the guidance of senior protection staff to identify protection needs, develop and implement protection strategies, and advocate for the rights of vulnerable individuals. This includes contributing to case management, community-based protection initiatives, and ensuring access to essential services. The position aims to provide a valuable learning experience while making a tangible contribution to UNHCR's protection efforts in Nigeria.

Responsibilities

The Protection Fellow will be responsible for assisting in the day-to-day implementation of protection activities within the UNHCR Nigeria operation. This includes supporting the identification and registration of persons of concern, conducting vulnerability assessments, and contributing to the development of individual protection plans. The fellow will assist in monitoring the protection situation, identifying protection risks and trends, and reporting findings to the supervisor. They will also support the provision of information and counseling to persons of concern, and facilitate their access to services such as healthcare, education, and legal assistance. Furthermore, the role involves supporting community-based protection mechanisms, engaging with local partners, and contributing to advocacy efforts aimed at promoting the rights and inclusion of refugees. The fellow may also be involved in data collection and analysis related to protection issues, and assist in the preparation of protection-related reports and documents. This position requires close collaboration with other UNHCR units and external stakeholders to ensure a coordinated approach to protection.

Work Experience

Some relevant work experience in humanitarian affairs, refugee protection, or a related field is desirable.
