Job Purpose
The Protection Intern will support UNHCR's protection activities, contributing to the safeguarding of refugees and displaced persons. This role involves assisting in the implementation of protection strategies and programs aimed at ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of vulnerable populations. The intern will gain practical experience in protection principles, international refugee law, and humanitarian response mechanisms. Key tasks include supporting case management, conducting research on protection issues, and contributing to the development of protection-related documents and reports. The position offers an opportunity to understand the complexities of humanitarian work and the challenges faced by displaced individuals, while directly contributing to UNHCR's mandate of providing protection and finding durable solutions.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of a Protection Officer or relevant staff, the Protection Intern will assist in the implementation of UNHCR's protection mandate. This includes supporting the registration and documentation of persons of concern, and assisting in the provision of individual case management services, including identification of specific needs and vulnerabilities. The intern will contribute to protection monitoring activities, including conducting interviews and focus group discussions, and analyzing protection risks and trends. They will also assist in the preparation of protection-related reports, briefing notes, and other documents. Furthermore, the intern may support the organization and facilitation of protection-related meetings, workshops, and training sessions. This role involves liaising with implementing partners and other stakeholders to ensure coordinated protection responses. The intern will also assist in data collection and analysis for protection programming and advocacy efforts, and contribute to awareness-raising activities on protection issues. Adherence to UNHCR's principles and standards, including the principle of confidentiality, is paramount.
Work Experience
Previous experience in a humanitarian context or with refugee issues is an asset. Experience in data collection or research is also beneficial.
