Senior Government Liaison Assistant
Organizational Context
The Senior Government Liaison Assistant is part of the Government Liaison Unit, reporting to the (Senior) Government Liaison Officer. This role involves participating in meetings and working groups related to government coordination and providing support on common processes. The incumbent exchanges information with UNHCR staff, government authorities, and external parties on matters important to the organization.
Job Purpose
The Senior Government Liaison Assistant supports the Government Liaison Unit by facilitating communication and information exchange between UNHCR, government authorities, and other external parties. This involves drafting routine correspondence and reports, preparing background materials for discussions, and collecting/registering information on government and local developments that may impact UNHCR's relationship with the government. The role also includes maintaining close working relations with local authorities and implementing partners, providing cooperation and guidance as needed. Additionally, the assistant is responsible for collecting statistics on persons of concern, assisting in the preparation of workshops and meetings, and managing external queries and information flows. The position requires proactive risk management, identifying and managing risks and opportunities impacting the area of responsibility, and reporting issues to supervisors.
Responsibilities
Draft routine correspondence and reports, prepare tables and corresponding text, and compile background material for discussions and briefings. Collect, register, and maintain information on government, local, and international developments that could impact the office's relationship with the government, including updates on the GCR and UN reform. Cultivate and maintain close working relationships with local authorities, governmental and non-governmental implementing partners, and other external stakeholders, offering cooperation and guidance. Gather and manage statistics related to persons of concern. Assist the supervisor in organizing and facilitating workshops, training sessions, seminars, and other meetings. Directly engage with government partners to provide requested information and follow up on outstanding issues. Manage incoming external queries and outgoing information, identifying and anticipating necessary actions. Prepare reports and correspondence concerning the office's interactions and activities. Manage budgets as assigned, including tracking expenditures. Serve as an interpreter and translator when required. Support the identification and management of risks and opportunities relevant to the area of responsibility, ensuring risk-based decision-making. Escalate risks, issues, and concerns to supervisors or relevant colleagues. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Experience
2 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or 1 year of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's degree or higher.
