Job Purpose
The Legal Protection and Solutions Intern will support UNHCR's efforts in providing legal protection and durable solutions to refugees and stateless persons. This role involves assisting in legal research, case management, and the development of protection strategies. The intern will contribute to ensuring that individuals under UNHCR's mandate receive adequate legal assistance and that appropriate solutions, such as resettlement, local integration, or voluntary repatriation, are pursued. The position aims to enhance the legal framework and practical implementation of protection measures, upholding international refugee law and human rights standards. The intern will gain valuable experience in international refugee law and humanitarian work.
Responsibilities
Conduct legal research on specific refugee law issues, international human rights law, and relevant national legislation. Assist in drafting legal opinions, policy briefs, and reports related to protection and solutions. Support the monitoring and analysis of legal and protection trends affecting refugees and asylum-seekers in the region. Contribute to the development and implementation of protection strategies and activities, including case management support. Assist in preparing documentation for legal proceedings or resettlement submissions. Participate in meetings with government officials, implementing partners, and other stakeholders to discuss protection concerns and solutions. Help in organizing training sessions or workshops on refugee law and protection principles. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of legal cases and protection activities. Provide administrative support to the legal and protection team as needed. Ensure compliance with UNHCR's policies and procedures in all aspects of work. Assist in advocacy efforts aimed at strengthening national asylum systems and promoting durable solutions.
Work Experience
Previous internship or volunteer experience in a legal or humanitarian setting is an asset. Familiarity with refugee law or human rights issues is desirable.
