Senior External Relations Assistant
Organizational Context
The Senior External Relations Assistant operates under the direct supervision of an External Relations Officer or other professional staff, depending on the office's structure. This role is crucial in supporting the management of the office's external relations activities, including organizing visits and preparing materials for external partners.
Job Purpose
The Senior External Relations Assistant plays a key role in organizing visits for foreign delegations, donors, press, and media, providing regular briefings, and drafting reports and materials for external partners. The incumbent assists in managing the external relations activities of the office. This position may receive guidance and operational support from External Relations/Public Information Units at the Country Office or Headquarters. All staff are accountable for their duties, adhering to UNHCR's regulatory framework, policies, and core values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for diversity.
Responsibilities
Drafting briefing notes, press releases, bulletins, reports, and newsletters, and preparing other public information materials as needed. Facilitating and accompanying visits of foreign delegations, partner NGOs, donors, and the media to refugee camps. Drafting and translating routine correspondence and texts. Assisting in the development and implementation of UNHCR's social media strategy, including conceptualizing and pitching stories for UNHCR's global website. Ensuring the availability of public information materials such as fact sheets, brochures, and briefing materials. Organizing visibility events, like World Refugee Day, and liaising with partners, refugees, and local communities. Potentially assisting in the compilation of weekly, monthly, annual, or quarterly thematic and situation reports. Reviewing daily media to keep the office informed of local developments. Providing information on UNHCR's activities to external partners and responding to non-complex media queries and correspondence. Supporting risk management and opportunity identification within the area of responsibility, ensuring risk-based decision-making and reporting concerns to supervisors.
Work Experience
2 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or 1 year of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree or higher. Previous experience in UN/UNHCR, completion of UNHCR learning programs, or specific relevant training is desirable.
