Organizational Context
The Driver is part of the UNHCR Office in Bassikounou, Mauritania, typically supervised by an Administrative Officer or similar. The role involves driving UNHCR vehicles for passengers and goods, maintaining vehicles, and adhering to security protocols. The incumbent interacts with internal staff and external partners, government authorities, and others, exchanging limited information.
Job Purpose
The Driver's primary purpose is to operate UNHCR vehicles safely and efficiently for transporting authorized personnel, delivering documents, and collecting items. This includes meeting officials at airports and facilitating immigration and customs processes. A significant part of the role involves ensuring the assigned vehicle is roadworthy through daily checks, basic maintenance, and arranging for necessary repairs. The Driver must maintain meticulous records of trips, mileage, and fuel consumption, and strictly follow all security guidelines and instructions from supervisors. The position also requires ensuring all necessary documentation for passengers and cargo is in order and supporting risk management by identifying and reporting potential issues to supervisors.
Responsibilities
The Driver is responsible for operating UNHCR vehicles for the transportation of authorized passengers and for the delivery and collection of documents and other items. This includes meeting official personnel at airports or other locations and assisting with immigration and customs formalities. A key duty is performing day-to-day maintenance of assigned vehicles, including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires, to ensure they are roadworthy and meet established security standards. The Driver will also perform minor repairs and arrange for other necessary repairs, ensuring the vehicle remains clean. In the event of an accident, the Driver must follow all required procedures and regulations. Accurate logging of official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities is essential. Strict adherence to instructions and security guidance from supervisors and security focal points is mandatory. The Driver must also ensure that all documentation for passengers, items, or cargo within the vehicle is valid. Additionally, the incumbent supports risk management by identifying and managing risks and seizing opportunities that impact their area of responsibility, reporting any risks, issues, or concerns to their supervisor or relevant colleagues. Performing other related duties as required is also part of the role.
Work Experience
A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required. This includes experience with driving rules and regulations and basic vehicle mechanical skills.
