Job Purpose
The Legal Intern will support the UNHCR Somalia Country Office in Mogadishu by providing legal assistance and research. This role is crucial for ensuring that UNHCR's operations in Somalia are in compliance with international refugee law and human rights standards. The intern will contribute to the protection of refugees and other persons of concern by assisting in the analysis of legal issues, drafting legal documents, and supporting advocacy efforts. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in international humanitarian law and refugee protection within a complex operational environment, contributing directly to UNHCR's mandate.
Responsibilities
The Legal Intern will be responsible for conducting legal research on various aspects of refugee law, international human rights law, and national asylum legislation relevant to Somalia. This includes analyzing case law, policy documents, and legislative frameworks. The intern will assist in drafting legal opinions, policy briefs, and other legal documents as required by the legal team. They will also support the preparation of submissions to national authorities and other stakeholders on legal matters concerning refugees and stateless persons. Furthermore, the intern will help in reviewing and analyzing agreements, memorandums of understanding, and other legal instruments. They may be involved in providing legal information and advice to UNHCR staff and, where appropriate, to persons of concern. The role also entails assisting in the organization and documentation of legal workshops, training sessions, and meetings. Maintaining accurate records of legal research and advice provided is essential. The intern will contribute to ensuring that UNHCR's activities in Somalia align with legal standards and best practices in refugee protection.
Work Experience
No prior work experience is strictly required, but previous internships or volunteer work in a legal setting, particularly in human rights or humanitarian law, would be an asset.
