Job Purpose

The Assistant Environment Officer will support UNHCR's environmental mandate by contributing to the development and implementation of environmental policies and strategies within refugee operations. This role involves assessing environmental impacts, promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring compliance with environmental standards in refugee camps and settlements. The incumbent will work to mitigate negative environmental consequences of displacement and humanitarian assistance, fostering resilience and environmental stewardship among affected populations and host communities. This position is crucial for integrating environmental considerations into all aspects of UNHCR's work, ensuring that operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner and contribute to long-term sustainability.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Environment Officer will be responsible for conducting environmental needs assessments in refugee settings, identifying key environmental challenges such as deforestation, water scarcity, waste management, and pollution. They will develop and implement environmental action plans and projects aimed at addressing these challenges, including reforestation initiatives, sustainable energy solutions, and improved waste management systems. The role involves monitoring the environmental impact of UNHCR operations and refugee activities, ensuring compliance with national environmental laws and UNHCR's environmental policies. Furthermore, the Assistant Environment Officer will provide technical guidance and training to UNHCR staff, partners, and refugees on environmental best practices. They will also contribute to environmental awareness campaigns and promote community participation in environmental management. This includes liaising with government authorities, local communities, and other stakeholders to coordinate environmental efforts and advocate for the integration of environmental concerns into broader humanitarian response plans. The position requires data collection, analysis, and reporting on environmental performance indicators.

Work Experience

Minimum of one year of relevant professional experience in environmental management, conservation, or sustainable development, preferably in a humanitarian or development context.
