Job Purpose
The Senior Legal Associate will provide expert legal advice and support to UNHCR operations in Turkiye, focusing on refugee law, international protection, and related legal matters. This role is crucial in ensuring that UNHCR's activities align with international and national legal frameworks, safeguarding the rights and well-being of refugees and asylum-seekers. The incumbent will contribute to policy development, legal analysis, and advocacy efforts, aiming to strengthen protection mechanisms and promote durable solutions. This position requires a deep understanding of complex legal issues and the ability to navigate challenging legal environments to uphold the principles of refugee protection and humanitarian assistance.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive legal advice and analysis on refugee law, international protection, and human rights law relevant to UNHCR's mandate and operations in Turkiye. Draft and review legal documents, including opinions, policy briefs, legal submissions, and agreements, ensuring compliance with international standards and national legislation. Support the development and implementation of legal strategies to address protection challenges faced by refugees and asylum-seekers. Represent UNHCR in legal forums, meetings with government authorities, and discussions with implementing partners, advocating for the rights and protection of displaced populations. Conduct legal research on emerging issues and provide recommendations for policy and operational adjustments. Assist in capacity-building initiatives for UNHCR staff and partners on legal matters related to refugee protection. Monitor legal developments and case law impacting refugees in Turkiye and the region. Contribute to the development of training materials and conduct training sessions on relevant legal topics. Ensure that all legal activities are conducted in accordance with UNHCR's legal framework, policies, and ethical standards. Support the legal aspects of resettlement, integration, and voluntary repatriation processes where applicable.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in international refugee law, human rights law, or related legal fields. Experience working with refugees or asylum-seekers in a legal capacity is highly desirable.
