Organizational Context
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Office in Uganda seeks an intern to support its Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Programme. The role operates within the Gender & Human Rights Unit, reporting to the Gender Programme Specialist and overall to the UNFPA Programme Coordinator. UNFPA's mandate focuses on ensuring every pregnancy is intended, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled, aligning with the ICPD Programme of Action and SDGs.
Job Purpose
The intern will contribute to a technical team focused on advancing gender equality and women's empowerment within UNFPA Uganda's Country Programme. This role involves supporting initiatives aimed at preventing and responding to gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices. The internship provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in programme analysis, strategic advisory, and the implementation of gender-focused interventions, directly contributing to UNFPA's mandate of promoting human rights and gender equality in Uganda.
Responsibilities
The intern will conduct research, collect, and analyze information on country-specific topics and UNFPA's mandate, contributing to analytical briefs and memos. Responsibilities include developing background documents and concept notes for initiatives addressing gender-based violence and harmful practices. The role involves supporting reviews, documentation, and dissemination of lessons learned from GBV interventions. The intern will assist in monitoring and evaluation activities by analyzing partner reports and developing tracking tools. Additionally, the intern will support the drafting of communication materials on GBV, assist with document editing and formatting, and provide administrative support. Organizing meetings, seminars, and workshops, attending relevant meetings, and preparing minutes are also key duties. The intern will maintain up-to-date knowledge in their assigned work areas and perform other tasks as assigned by their supervisor.
Work Experience
Some experience working with development agencies, including volunteer capacity, is desirable. Experience in gender issues, women's rights, protection, gender-based violence, or harmful practices is beneficial. Strong analytical and writing skills, fluency in English, initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural environment are required.
