Organizational Context
The intern will support all sub-offices in Syria under the direct supervision of the Assistant Representative, Syria Country Office. This role is part of UNFPA's initiative to engage local Syrian youth in digital transformation efforts, building their capacity and exposure to the UN system. UNFPA is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is intended, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled, working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience by supporting UNFPA's digital transformation efforts in Syria. The intern will assist in leveraging digital tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance programme delivery, data analysis, and operational efficiency across all sub-offices. The role seeks to complement academic studies with hands-on learning, offering exposure to UNFPA's work and promoting youth engagement and gender equality in technology and humanitarian efforts. The internship contributes to UNFPA's mandate of achieving a world where every pregnancy is intended, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled.
Responsibilities
The intern will provide support in Digital Innovation & AI, assisting in identifying opportunities to integrate AI tools for data analysis and automation, and supporting the development of digital solutions for programme and operational needs. Responsibilities also include contributing to data visualization, dashboards, and reporting tools. In Programme Support, the intern will aid in data collection, cleaning, and analysis for UNFPA programmes, and support monitoring and evaluation activities using digital tools. For Communications & Knowledge Management, the intern will support digital content creation, document innovation initiatives, and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing platforms. Research on emerging AI trends, digital policy, and ethical AI practices is also expected. Finally, in Capacity Building & Learning, the intern will participate in relevant training and workshops.
Work Experience
Demonstrated interest in AI, digital tools, or innovation is required. Basic experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Python, Power BI) and digital platforms or content creation is necessary. Some experience working with development agencies, including in a volunteer capacity, is desirable. Strong analytical and writing skills, initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural setting are also important.
Skills
Proficiency in English is required, with knowledge of other languages being an asset. Key skills include data analysis, digital content creation, and research. Behavioral competencies such as initiative, sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment are essential. Familiarity with AI tools and digital platforms is also important.
