This role is for a National Individual Consultant within UNFPA Nigeria, based in Abuja. The consultant will contribute to UNFPA's mandate of delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. The specific focus is on health economics and midwifery investments.
Job Purpose
The Health Economist Midwifery Investment Specialist will provide technical expertise to strengthen health systems, particularly in the area of midwifery services and investments. The role aims to enhance the economic viability and efficiency of midwifery programs, ensuring they are well-resourced and contribute effectively to maternal and newborn health outcomes. This involves analyzing investment needs, developing cost-effective strategies, and supporting evidence-based decision-making to optimize resource allocation for midwifery and related health services within Nigeria.
Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for conducting economic analyses related to midwifery services and investments. This includes assessing the cost-effectiveness of different midwifery models and interventions, and identifying opportunities for improved resource allocation. The role involves developing investment cases and proposals to secure funding for midwifery and reproductive health programs. Furthermore, the specialist will provide technical guidance on health financing mechanisms and policy recommendations to support sustainable midwifery services. The consultant will also contribute to monitoring and evaluating the economic impact of investments in midwifery and related health areas, ensuring alignment with UNFPA's strategic objectives.
Work Experience
Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in health economics, public health, or a related field, with a focus on reproductive, maternal, and newborn health. Experience in analyzing health investments and developing policy recommendations is essential. Experience working with UN agencies or international organizations is an asset.
Skills
Strong analytical and quantitative skills, particularly in health economics and econometrics. Proficiency in data analysis software. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Understanding of health systems strengthening and investment appraisal. Knowledge of midwifery and reproductive health issues.
