Youth, Peace and Security(YPS) Intern - (6 months duration) - WCARO, Dakar, Senegal
Organizational Context
The Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Intern will be based at the UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal, reporting to the Youth, Peace and Security Specialist. UNFPA is the lead UN agency focused on delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled, aligning with its strategic plan to end preventable maternal deaths, unmet need for family planning, and gender-based violence.
Job Purpose
The internship aims to provide a learning opportunity for an individual to gain practical experience in the field of Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) within the UNFPA West and Central Africa Regional Office. The intern will support research, project implementation, communication, and coordination efforts related to youth engagement in peacebuilding and conflict prevention. This role contributes to UNFPA's mandate by enhancing the participation of young people in peace processes and fostering their potential, aligning with the organization's strategic goals for a more peaceful and equitable world.
Responsibilities
The intern will support research and analysis on youth participation in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and humanitarian action, including monitoring YPS policies and developing briefing notes. Responsibilities also include assisting in the facilitation of regional planning and coordination of YPS projects, supporting the implementation of youth engagement activities in peace processes, and contributing to the design of youth-led peacebuilding initiatives. Furthermore, the intern will draft communication materials for YPS activities, assist in developing advocacy materials, and support the organization of related events. Engagement with youth networks and civil society organizations, documentation of best practices, and participation in inter-agency meetings are also key duties.
Work Experience
Prior experience volunteering in youth-led initiatives, peacebuilding, or humanitarian work is considered an advantage. Demonstrated interest in development, peace and security, and youth engagement is required.
Skills
Strong research and analytical skills are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, adapt to new environments, and maintain good working relations with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is necessary. Demonstrated written and spoken proficiency in English and French is required.
