Job Purpose
The Media and Crisis Communications Specialist will lead the development and execution of UNFPA's regional media and communications strategy, reporting to the Regional Communications Adviser. The role is responsible for positioning UNFPA as a credible and authoritative voice, managing media relationships, driving proactive storytelling, and spearheading communications during humanitarian crises. This involves shaping public perception of UNFPA's work and impact, providing expert advice on media and public affairs, and ensuring coherent messaging across diverse platforms and audiences, particularly in sensitive political environments.
Responsibilities
The Specialist will develop and implement media relations strategies to shape public perception of UNFPA's work and impact, offering analysis and advice on media and public affairs issues. This includes media mapping, fostering relationships with journalists and influencers, pitching stories, issuing press releases, and providing expert commentary. The role involves coordinating press conferences and media events, developing news-driven content such as statements and articles, and tailoring messages for various outlets. Additionally, the Specialist will prepare spokespeople with talking points and key messages, monitor media coverage, and contribute to media training. In crisis situations, the role coordinates response efforts, drafts key messages, monitors media for misinformation, liaises with media on UN activities, and ensures consistent messaging across all channels.
Work Experience
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in communications, journalism, or media relations. Demonstrated experience in crisis communications, humanitarian communications, or emergency public information is required, with a preference for on-site humanitarian experience. Proven track record in media strategy development and managing high-level media relationships is essential. Experience in spokesperson management and media training is also necessary. Experience within the UN system or international development organizations is desirable.
Skills
Strong news judgment, exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, proficiency with digital communications tools and media monitoring platforms. Knowledge of ICPD, SRHR, GBV, and humanitarian frameworks is advantageous. Core competencies include strategic thinking, analytical problem-solving, communicating for impact, and managing relationships under pressure. Functional competencies involve creating visibility, advocacy, job knowledge, and leveraging partnerships.
