National Consultant: Socio-Demographic Data Specialist
Organizational Context
The UNFPA Pacific Sub-Regional Office (PSRO) supports 14 Pacific Island Countries and Territories in ensuring reproductive health and rights. The Population and Development (P&D) unit is central to this mandate, assisting governments in generating, analyzing, and utilizing high-quality disaggregated data for national population policies and sustainable development planning. This role provides technical and statistical support to the P&D unit.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to provide high-level technical and statistical support to the Population and Development (P&D) unit. The specialist will be responsible for translating complex demographic data into actionable policy insights, thereby strengthening national statistical capacities. A key contribution will be ensuring the technical integrity of UNFPA-supported population programs across the Pacific region, facilitating evidence-based decision-making for sustainable development and population policies.
Responsibilities
The role involves leading and supporting in-depth analysis of census, CRVS, and household survey data to identify socio-demographic trends and disparities. Responsibilities include drafting analytical reports, policy briefs, and presentations for diverse audiences, and developing statistical dashboards for enhanced data accessibility. The specialist will provide technical guidance and training to national counterparts on data processing, analysis, and interpretation, and assist in developing methodologies for data collection instruments. Support will be given to integrating new data sources and technologies, and contributing to training materials. The role also focuses on promoting data dissemination and utilization for policy formulation and program design, and collaborating closely with national statistical offices, government ministries, UN agencies, and regional organizations.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in socio-demographic data analysis, statistical methods, and population studies. Demonstrated experience in analyzing complex census and household survey data is essential. Proficiency in statistical software packages (e.g., R, Stata, SPSS) and experience in capacity building are necessary. Experience with data visualization tools or GIS software is desirable.
