Organizational Context
UNESCO's Sciences Sector (SCS) is seeking an expert for a 3-month consultant contract based in Paris, with remote work flexibility. This role is part of the "In the minds of Gen Z: Understanding today's citizens" research project. The project aims to deepen the understanding of Gen Z's civic and political participation, providing insights for policymakers and fostering further research. The work will contribute to recognizing and understanding the civic and political actions young people are already engaged in.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this role is to conduct a comprehensive landscape analysis on the civic and political participation of Generation Z. This analysis will explore the diverse phenomena influencing their actions, motivations, values, and aspirations. The project seeks to understand how factors such as identities, experiences, relationships, actions, and context intersect to shape Gen Z's engagement. The findings will be crucial for developing tangible policy orientations that enable governments and organizations to effectively recognize, support, and harness the contributions of young people to society. Ultimately, this research aims to inspire further academic reflection and provide a foundation for addressing contemporary challenges with the innovative ideas and active participation of youth.
Responsibilities
The expert will undertake state-of-the-art research, drawing from the project's Framing Document and identifying additional relevant sources, including potential contributors and methods to engage Gen Z directly. A key responsibility is to write the full manuscript for the landscape analysis, adhering to UNESCO's publication guidelines. This includes producing a first draft of approximately 10-15 standard pages, incorporating revisions based on UNESCO and peer review feedback, and delivering a final draft of satisfactory quality. The expert must ensure the research and final publication meet the highest scientific and academic rigor standards, comparable to those published in peer-reviewed journals. Collaboration with an Expert Group composed of scholars from all UNESCO regions is expected throughout the project.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of research experience in youth political and civic participation is necessary, with at least 1 year specifically focused on Generation Z. Proven knowledge of broader themes (politics, civics, youth) and specific project areas (Gen Z, contemporary civic and political issues) is essential. A record of high-quality scholarly research, including publications in peer-reviewed journals or equivalent, is required.

Essential skills include proven conceptual and analytical abilities, excellent research capabilities, and a strong understanding of concepts related to youth, politics, and civics. The ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural team environment, as well as independently and efficiently, is crucial. Adherence to UN principles is also required.
