Driver
Organizational Context
The Driver position is within the Sector for Administration and Management (ADM) at the UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office. The incumbent reports to the Head of Office and UNESCO Representative, and directly to the Finance and Administrative Officer. This role involves determining travel itineraries, exercising judgment in route selection, and adhering to security procedures. The work requires careful driving, often in challenging conditions, and necessitates knowledge of local traffic laws, the local environment, and basic vehicle maintenance.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the Driver position is to provide reliable and safe transportation services for UNESCO staff, officials, and authorized visitors using official vehicles. This includes ensuring the vehicle is in good running condition through regular maintenance and cost-effective use. The role involves meeting personnel at the airport, assisting with basic formalities, and potentially providing informal translation in the local language. The Driver will also be responsible for delivering and collecting mail and documents, and may perform other administrative support tasks when not driving. The position requires flexibility to drive long or irregular hours, including weekends, and to handle occasional heavy lifting.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include driving UNESCO staff, officials, and visitors safely and efficiently in official vehicles. The Driver must ensure the vehicle is well-maintained, clean, and in good working order by performing daily checks, timely minor repairs, and arranging for scheduled maintenance and servicing. This involves keeping accurate vehicle logs, managing spare parts, and ensuring all necessary documents like insurance and registration are current. The Driver will also be responsible for meeting and assisting airport arrivals, delivering and collecting mail and documents, and potentially performing other office support duties such as photocopying or filing. Additionally, the incumbent must be prepared to cover for other drivers during their absence and assist with the use of communication equipment like HF/VHF radios and satellite phones.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional driving experience is required. Fluency in both English and Kiswahili, spoken and written, is essential for all applicants.
Skills
Proven ability to drive safely and in compliance with local regulations. Strong communication skills are necessary. Experience operating various types of vehicles is required. Basic skills in vehicle repair are essential. Familiarity with radio, email, and telephone communication is needed. Knowledge of UN vehicle driving rules and regulations is advantageous.
