In Peru, the UNESCO Office supports the management and preservation of cultural and natural heritage through technical assistance and strategic projects. In collaboration with KOICA, UNESCO is implementing a project focused on establishing a circular economy for sustainable tourism in the Cusco Region.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to conduct comprehensive solid waste characterization studies for various institutions in the Cusco and Urubamba provinces. The objective is to analyze waste generation, composition, and per capita rates across educational institutions, local education management units (UGELs), restaurants, accommodations, and tourist transit areas. Additionally, eco-efficiency diagnoses will be performed for UGELs and tourism service providers to identify areas for improvement and propose measures for efficient resource use and proper waste management. The findings will inform strategies for sustainable waste management and contribute to the protection of cultural and natural heritage in the region.
Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for developing a work plan and designing data collection tools for solid waste characterization studies and eco-efficiency diagnoses, prioritizing digital formats. This includes conducting five distinct solid waste characterization studies for educational institutions (21), UGELs (2), restaurants (11), accommodations (11), and tourist transit spaces (3). The consultant will also perform 24 eco-efficiency diagnoses for UGELs (2) and tourism service providers (22). Furthermore, the consultant will develop an eco-efficiency implementation strategy for UGELs, including conducting at least one workshop per UGEL. All activities require the acquisition of necessary materials, on-site data collection, and the submission of digital reports, photographic evidence, and systematized data. The consultant will report to the project coordinator, ensuring effective management and alignment with organizational objectives.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in projects related to solid waste management, sustainability, or eco-efficiency. Proven participation in at least five solid waste characterization studies and/or eco-efficiency diagnostic experiences with public or private institutions. Prior work experience in solid waste management in Cusco is also required.
Skills
Key competencies include Accountability, Communication, Planning and Organizing, and Results Focus. Proficiency in Spanish is essential. The ability to travel within the country as needed for project activities is also required.
