UNESCO, in partnership with Beijing Normal University and the Government of Tanzania, is implementing a project to close the digital divide for women and girls. The initiative addresses systemic barriers to digital education and technology-driven opportunities, aiming to increase girls' participation and confidence in ICT and STEM fields through school-based extracurricular activities like ICT clubs and mentorship programs.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this consultancy is to provide overall technical leadership, strategic guidance, quality assurance, and coordination for the gender component of the UNESCO-BNU Project. This involves ensuring gender-responsive and gender-transformative approaches are integrated across all project activities, including ICT clubs, mentorship programs, and innovation boot camps. The role requires co-designing project methodologies and materials, mobilizing and supervising a team of gender specialists, and strengthening the capacities of stakeholders to effectively implement and sustain gender-transformative ICT education initiatives. The objective is to enhance girls' participation, leadership, empowerment, and sustained engagement in ICT education and digital innovation.
Responsibilities
Provide overall technical leadership, coordination, and quality assurance for the gender technical team working across 20 schools. Mobilize, assign, and supervise three Supporting Gender Specialists, offering technical guidance and mentoring. Review and validate their outputs, ensuring ICT club interventions challenge gender norms and strengthen girls' agency, leadership, confidence, and aspirations in ICT and STEM. Lead the identification and preparation of female ICT and STEM role models and mentors, and design mentorship and career exposure engagements. Provide technical guidance to ensure gender-transformative content and approaches are integrated into project methodologies, training materials, and capacity-building activities. Maintain direct technical responsibility for five assigned schools, including support, monitoring, and reporting. Ensure consistent application of gender-responsive approaches and identify emerging gender-related barriers. Consolidate and quality-assure technical inputs and reports from the gender technical team and directly supported schools.
Work Experience
Requires over 10 years of experience in gender equality, girls' empowerment, and gender-transformative programming, preferably in education. Demonstrated expertise in integrating gender approaches into education, digital skills, ICT, or STEM programs is essential. Proven experience in technical leadership, program coordination, and supervising multidisciplinary teams is necessary.
Skills
Excellent facilitation, communication, analytical, coordination, mentoring, and report-writing skills are essential for this role. Proficiency in English is required, with knowledge of Kiswahili being an advantage.
