Organizational Context

UNESCO, in partnership with Beijing Normal University and the Government of Tanzania, is implementing a project to close the digital divide by ensuring gender-transformative digital skills education for women and girls. The initiative addresses systemic barriers limiting women's and girls' participation in digital learning and technology-driven opportunities, responding to persistent gender disparities in access and skills development. Despite Tanzania's digital transformation, girls face challenges like low confidence, lack of role models, and societal norms hindering their progress in ICT and STEM fields.

Job Purpose

This role supports the 'Closing the Digital Divide' project, aiming to advance inclusive and gender-transformative digital education. The project addresses systemic barriers that limit women and girls' participation in digital learning and technology. It responds to gender disparities in digital access, skills, and ICT career pathways. The initiative focuses on increasing girls' exposure to ICT through school-based extracurricular activities, including ICT Clubs, mentorship, workshops, and boot camps. These activities aim to nurture interest, build confidence, develop digital competencies, challenge gender stereotypes, and broaden awareness of ICT studies and career opportunities. The goal is to create empowering learning environments that foster girls' leadership, problem-solving skills, and aspirations, ensuring their meaningful engagement and sustained participation in digital innovation and future ICT careers.

Responsibilities

Provide field-based technical support for integrating gender-responsive and gender-transformative approaches into ICT Clubs and extracurricular activities within assigned schools. Offer technical guidance to teachers, mentors, and school focal persons to enhance girls' meaningful participation, leadership, confidence, and empowerment. Contribute to co-designing gender-transformative content for project activities, addressing gender norms and stereotypes to strengthen girls' agency and aspirations in ICT and STEM. Assist in identifying and preparing female ICT/STEM role models and mentors, and in designing mentorship and career-exposure engagements. Support the integration of gender-transformative content into project methodologies and school-level activities. Monitor implementation within assigned schools, identify gender-related barriers and opportunities, and provide practical recommendations. Document achievements, lessons learned, and best practices, submitting school-level monitoring reports and a consolidated report to the Lead Gender Expert.

Work Experience

Requires at least 5 years of professional experience in gender equality, girls' empowerment, and gender-transformative programming. Demonstrated experience integrating gender into education, ICT, STEM, youth, or community development programs is essential. Experience working with schools, adolescents, teachers, and community stakeholders is also required.

Skills

Strong facilitation, mentoring, communication, analytical, and report-writing skills are essential for this role. Proficiency in English and Kiswahili is also required.
