Associate Project Officer
Organizational Context
The UNESCO Office in Jordan collaborates with national authorities to preserve and promote tangible and intangible cultural heritage. It partners with ministries and local bodies to ensure the sustainable conservation of Jordan's rich cultural heritage. Current projects focus on sustainable socio-economic development through heritage preservation, contributing to livelihoods and local tourism.
Job Purpose
The Associate Project Officer will support the UNESCO Amman office's Culture Unit in achieving its goals and ensuring the timely finalization of ongoing activities and projects. This role involves assisting in the regular follow-up and monitoring of rehabilitation and construction activities. The officer will work under the general supervision of the UNESCO Jordan Head of Office and the direct supervision of the Culture Programme Specialist, coordinating with culture staff and administrative/financial personnel to manage project phases, support implementation, and ensure quality interventions.
Responsibilities
Support all project phases, including planning, execution, monitoring, and reporting. Provide assistance for rehabilitation and construction works across Jordan, including coordination and site supervision. Regularly follow up with contractors to update BoQs and ensure quality according to specifications. Contribute to assessing and monitoring executed works, preparing related documents and reports. Conduct field visits for site supervision, ensuring adherence to design, specifications, safety, and quality standards. Review contractor deliverables and reports for technical compliance. Proactively address potential difficulties in consultation with the supervisor. Facilitate information sharing among partners, stakeholders, and local authorities, maintaining strong relationships. Participate in technical and stakeholder meetings, drafting minutes and official correspondence. Support administrative tasks and project management, including budget and invoice review. Perform other tasks as requested by the supervisor.
Work Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in architecture, architectural conservation, structural engineering, or cultural heritage rehabilitation. Experience with UN agencies or international NGOs, particularly in Cultural Heritage, is advantageous. Site supervision experience is also beneficial.
Skills
Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to analyze and synthesize information from various sources. Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications. Knowledge of historical building materials and construction methods in the Middle East. Familiarity with project delivery, budget management, and monitoring tools. Excellent coordination, organizational, and prioritization skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver results within deadlines. Teamwork and cross-cultural collaboration skills. Understanding of local cultures and sensitivities. Good IT skills with standard office software.
