Job Purpose

The Research Scientist will initiate, develop, and coordinate cutting-edge research in condensed matter and statistical physics, complementing the section's existing work. This role involves providing guidance and mentorship to post-doctoral fellows, visiting scientists, and students. The incumbent will also teach courses at ICTP and other institutions, and actively participate in organizing scientific activities within the section. A key aspect of the position is contributing to the selection process for participants in ICTP programs and activities related to the field, ensuring the continued advancement of scientific talent and collaboration.

Responsibilities

Undertake front-line research in condensed matter and statistical physics, including identifying, developing, and implementing research projects. Provide guidance and mentorship to post-doctoral fellows, associates, visitors, and students involved in research collaborations. Report research findings at major international meetings. Teach in the Diploma program, supervise student theses, and provide scientific supervision to M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Participate in the selection of students for ICTP programs. Organize ICTP meetings and activities, both at ICTP and externally, with a focus on developing countries. Apply for and manage individual research grants. Establish and maintain cooperation with scientists globally, identifying their needs and recommending program integration. Participate in the programs of ICTP Partner Institutes.

Work Experience

A minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience in condensed matter and/or statistical physics or a related field is required. At least 2 years of this experience should be at the international level. Internationally recognized research achievements in relevant areas are essential, as is experience in teaching or mentoring undergraduate or postgraduate students.

Skills

Proven ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team environment. Excellent analytical skills for synthesizing information from diverse sources. Effective communication skills for discussing complex technical and scientific issues in English. Experience in designing, implementing, and managing scientific projects and coordinating training programs is highly desirable.
