Organizational Context
This consultancy is part of the SMART-ED project in Uzbekistan, funded by ISDB/ISFD/GPE. The project aims to strengthen the national education system for sustainable, inclusive, competency-based education (CBE). It focuses on reforming pre-service and in-service teacher education to enhance professional development. The consultant will specifically support the revision of pre-service teacher education programmes in Natural Science, modernizing teacher preparation to equip new educators with contemporary skills.
Job Purpose
The consultant will support the revision of pre-service teacher education programmes in Natural Science within Uzbekistan as part of the SMART-ED project. This initiative aims to improve the mechanisms for revising teacher education programmes, introduce innovative practices, and establish a robust system for continuous professional learning. The project focuses on strengthening pre-service teacher training through revising programmes, developing new academic and methodology courses, and creating a system for innovation transfer. The ultimate goal is to modernize teacher preparation, ensuring educators are equipped with contemporary, competency-oriented skills and practices aligned with CBE principles and international best practices.
Responsibilities
The International Consultant will review and redesign pre-service Natural Science Teacher Education Programmes (Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Physics) in Uzbekistan, ensuring alignment with competency-based education (CBE) principles and international best practices. This involves conducting a situational analysis to identify gaps in competency development, student-centered learning, assessment, and inclusive pedagogy. The consultant will facilitate consultations with national stakeholders, including faculty, students, and employers, to gather recommendations. Based on findings, the consultant will redesign programmes, updating learning outcomes, curriculum, teaching approaches, and assessment strategies. Programme handbooks will be revised using a project template. Additionally, subject-specific methodology courses will be revised to model effective CBE, promote inquiry-based learning, integrate formative assessment, and exemplify inclusive, student-centered pedagogy. All revised documents will undergo stakeholder feedback and validation.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in teacher education, curriculum design, competency-based education, and higher education programme development is necessary. Demonstrated experience in reviewing and redesigning pre-service teacher education programmes, particularly in Natural Sciences, is essential. Expertise in competency-based curriculum design, learner-centered methodologies, and assessment practices is required.
Skills
Excellent analytical, report-writing, communication, and presentation skills are essential. The ability to produce high-quality technical reports, curriculum documents, and programme handbooks is required.
