Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this consultancy is to provide expert technical and operational support in media and communications for the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok. This role focuses on implementing communication strategies, developing compelling content, managing digital and social media engagement, and executing public outreach initiatives. The Consultant will be instrumental in enhancing UNESCO's regional visibility, fostering stronger stakeholder relationships, and ensuring the effective communication of programme achievements and organizational priorities to diverse audiences. This position supports senior management and programme teams by bolstering strategic communication efforts and ensuring the dissemination of information aligns with UNESCO's overarching goals and values.
Responsibilities
The Consultant will develop and implement communication and external engagement strategies, including planning, messaging, and audience targeting, ensuring compliance with UNESCO branding and donor requirements. They will coordinate public-facing communication outputs, manage media relations, and build relationships with key partners and stakeholders to enhance UNESCO's public positioning. Responsibilities include drafting high-quality communication materials such as press releases, articles, speeches, and human-interest stories, and preparing talking points and briefing notes for senior leadership. The role involves managing UNESCO Bangkok's website and social media platforms, designing and implementing digital campaigns, and monitoring analytics. Additionally, the Consultant will coordinate media relations, support communication campaigns for key organizational priorities, assist in organizing events, and monitor communication effectiveness, providing recommendations for improvement. They will also monitor political and reputational risks in the Mekong countries and advise on communication strategies, working closely with programme teams to ensure alignment and coordinated implementation of communication activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant professional experience in communications, public relations, or journalism is necessary, including experience in strategic advisory roles. Proven ability to analyze communication challenges and develop innovative strategies is essential. Experience in content development, media relations, and digital communications is also required. Prior experience within the UN system or similar international organizations is advantageous.
Skills
Excellent English writing and communication skills are essential, with demonstrated experience in supporting senior-level media engagement and digital strategy. Strong leadership and coordination abilities are required to manage complex communication projects and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
