Organizational Context
The UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) has established a Water and Gender Component since 2014. Its primary objective is to advance gender equality and empower women in the water sector. Key activities include developing methodologies, providing evidence-based technical support, conducting advocacy, and offering on-the-ground project assistance. WWAP engages with government leaders, water practitioners, academia, and the general public to achieve its goals.
Job Purpose
The International Senior Water and Gender Expert will support the implementation of the UNESCO WWAP Water and Gender approach within GEF Transboundary Water projects. This role involves developing activities and outputs focused on capacity building, particularly in relation to the technical support agreed between UNESCO and UN Water's Integrated Monitoring Initiative (IMI). The expert will contribute to the gender contextualization of SDG 6, ensuring that gender considerations are integrated into water management and policy frameworks. The position requires direct supervision from the Water and Gender Programme Specialist, focusing on advancing gender equality and women's empowerment in water-related initiatives.
Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for several key areas. In WWAP publications, they will support the editorial process for gender and water documents, focusing on content editing and highlighting outcomes from GEF Transboundary Water projects and other relevant technical assistance. For water and gender project implementation, the consultant will assist in executing activities within GEF/FAO projects, including developing project documents, conducting gender and livelihood analyses, and implementing training. They will also develop publications and reports for donors and colleagues, and support project-related outreach and presentations. In advocacy and inter-agency collaboration, the consultant will support the UN Water - Integrated Monitoring Initiative (IMI) gender contextualization process by coordinating Gender Working Group meetings and promoting awareness through webinars and capacity development activities for selected countries.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience is necessary, ideally in development intersecting with natural resources, social sciences, and gender. Experience in implementing gender, education, capacity development, or natural resources projects in complex contexts is essential. Proven experience working with diverse stakeholders, including governmental parties, and in community mobilization is also required.
Skills
Proficiency in IT, strong prioritization and deadline management abilities are essential. The candidate must be able to work effectively in a team, build networks, and engage in participatory processes. Experience in designing and executing social studies, including gender analyses, and implementing training programs is crucial. Field experience in Asia and Africa is desirable.
