Job Purpose
The Nurse will provide essential first-line medical and health care support to approximately 160 ICTP staff, 200-250 consultants, research fellows, and visitors, as well as around 40 staff from the Academy of Sciences for Developing World (TWAS). Working under the supervision of the Head of Unit/Senior Human Resources Officer and in collaboration with the Chief of Medical Service and contracted Medical Consultants, the incumbent will manage immediate health needs, offer advice on medical situations and preventive care, and ensure timely referral to specialized medical services when necessary. This role is crucial for maintaining the health and well-being of the ICTP community.
Responsibilities
Provide immediate first aid care to all individuals on the ICTP Miramare Campus, assessing their medical needs and offering advice on specific health situations or general preventive care. Offer expert guidance on managing illnesses, referring individuals to the ICTP Medical Consultant or other physicians as needed, and following up on hospitalized patients. Advise on the administration of prescribed medications and self-care practices, providing emotional support to patients and their families, and assisting with information on home care and diet planning. Organize pre-recruitment medical examinations for new staff and arrange periodic medical check-ups for at-risk personnel, in accordance with UNESCO/HQ procedures. Schedule appointments for staff at laboratory facilities and assist in health promotion initiatives, such as disease awareness campaigns and vaccinations. Liaise with the Chief, HRM/SST on confidential medical matters, including sick leave and disability. Maintain an updated list of local medical resources and facilitate appointments. Coordinate with local health authorities on reportable infectious diseases, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to international organization protocols.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience as a Nurse is required. Desirable experience includes working in an international environment and specialized experience in Trauma and Emergency care.
Skills
Possession of BLSD qualification is essential. Requires excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with empathy and care on sensitive medical issues. Must demonstrate integrity, discretion, tact, and diplomacy, maintaining strict confidentiality. Ability to work independently, manage emergencies under pressure, and exhibit a reliable, responsive, and service-minded attitude. Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is necessary.
