Organizational Context
UNESCO is supporting the Khortytsia National Reserve in Ukraine, which has faced significant challenges due to the full-scale invasion. The conflict has led to the destruction of cultural infrastructure and the urgent need to safeguard heritage, including archaeological findings. This initiative, funded by Sweden, aims to strengthen the Reserve's team and support archaeological monitoring missions in affected areas.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to enhance the efficiency of archaeological monitoring and surveys at the Khortytsia National Reserve. The role provides young professionals and students with practical experience in archaeological excavation and survey activities. Participants will learn from the Reserve's experts through hands-on work, contributing to the documentation of archaeological sites in conflict-affected areas. The initiative is part of a project to assess and monitor damage to cultural heritage, ensuring the continuation of documentation using standardized assessment forms developed with UNESCO's support.
Responsibilities
The consultant will undertake tasks related to archaeological excavation and survey activities, following the instructions and needs of the Khortytsia National Reserve staff. This role involves practical, hands-on work to improve the efficiency of archaeological monitoring and surveys. The assignment is part-time, requiring approximately 18 hours per week for a duration of three weeks, totaling 54 hours per person. The work will focus on investigating two specific locations on Khortytsia Island: one potentially related to an 18th-century Cossack settlement or military camp, and another from the Bronze Age, aiming to determine its extent and cultural layer. Regular progress reports will be submitted for UNESCO approval.
