Organizational Context
UNESCO is supporting Ukraine's cultural heritage amidst the full-scale invasion. The conflict has led to the destruction of over 2,000 cultural facilities and significant damage to archaeological sites, including the Khortytsia National Reserve. In response, UNESCO is implementing a project funded by Sweden to safeguard heritage, provide emergency repairs, support restoration training, and procure essential equipment for monitoring and digitization efforts in affected areas.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to strengthen the Khortytsia National Reserve's team by recruiting students and young professionals to support ongoing archaeological monitoring missions. The initiative is part of the "Emergency Measures at Khortytsia National Reserve" project, funded by Sweden. The primary goal is to ensure the continuous monitoring of archaeological sites in conflict-affected regions and to meticulously document them using a standardized archaeological damage assessment form developed with UNESCO's support. This role offers practical experience in archaeological surveys and excavation, contributing to the preservation of Ukraine's invaluable cultural heritage during a critical period.
Responsibilities
The consultant will undertake tasks directly related to archaeological excavation and survey activities, following the specific needs and instructions provided by the Khortytsia National Reserve's staff. This role is designed to enhance the efficiency of archaeological monitoring and surveys while offering participants invaluable practical experience. Through hands-on work, individuals will learn from the Reserve's experts, gaining insights into heritage preservation techniques in challenging environments. The assignment is part-time, requiring approximately 18 hours per week for a duration of 4 weeks, totaling 72 hours of work. This contribution will directly support the ongoing efforts to document and protect cultural heritage sites.
Work Experience
Previous experience collaborating with the Khortytsia National Reserve is considered an advantage for candidates applying for this role.
Skills
Strong communication skills are essential for effective collaboration and reporting within the team and with the Reserve's staff.
