Organizational Context
UNESCO is supporting Ukraine's Khortytsia National Reserve in safeguarding cultural heritage amidst the full-scale invasion. The conflict has led to widespread destruction of cultural infrastructure. UNESCO's project, funded by Sweden, focuses on emergency measures, including professional training for young professionals in restoration and conservation works on rescued and museum collection artefacts.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to strengthen the Khortytsia National Reserve's capacity in cultural heritage protection, specifically in restoration and conservation. The role involves hands-on work with artefacts affected by the changing water levels of the Dnipro River and items from the museum's permanent collection. The initiative is crucial for the long-term preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage for future generations and research. Participants will gain practical experience and learn from experts, contributing to the efficiency of collection management and the safeguarding of vital cultural assets.
Responsibilities
The consultant will undertake tasks related to the conservation and restoration of museum collections, following the instructions of the Reserve's staff. This includes direct participation in the stabilization and preliminary conservation of archaeological objects, particularly those recovered from hydroarchaeological investigations in the Dnipro River and the Velykyi Luh area. Responsibilities also encompass the conservation and stabilization of waterlogged archaeological wood, such as ancient wooden navigation vessels. Furthermore, the role involves assisting in the restoration of metal archaeological artifacts discovered in the Dnipro River and supporting the Restoration Department in ensuring proper preservation conditions for cultural heritage objects, especially watercraft-related monuments, in preparation for wartime relocation.
Work Experience
Previous collaboration with the Khortytsia National Reserve is considered an advantage.
