The UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (UNESCO MGIEP) is a Category 1 research institute in the Asia-Pacific region focused on achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.7. MGIEP promotes Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to foster peaceful mindsets and nurtures core Social and Emotional Competencies (SECs) among educators and youth. The institute generates research and evidence to inform policy and practice on SEL for learning, peace, global citizenship, and sustainable development.
Job Purpose
This role supports the design, development, and implementation of research programs related to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) for learning and the cultivation of social and emotional competencies for peace and sustainability. The Associate Project Officer (Research) will work in close collaboration with team members to advance research on SEL in both formal and informal learning environments. This includes contributing to the design of research studies, supporting data analysis, and assisting in the implementation of online experimental and assessment tasks. The position aims to generate evidence to inform policy and program implementation, contributing to the institute's mid-term strategy and the advancement of SDG 4.7.
Responsibilities
Review and synthesize the latest research and evidence across program domains related to SEL, early childhood, education, global citizenship, peace, and sustainable development. Contribute to the design of research studies that strengthen the role of SEL in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4.7, with a focus on K-12 learners and teachers. Support the analysis of research data and develop advanced analytical skills. Demonstrate proficiency in statistical knowledge and data analysis using tools such as R or Python. Assist in designing and implementing online experimental and assessment tasks using platforms like Pavlovia. Collaborate with digital pedagogy specialists to support the development of SEL programs and assessment tools. Assist in designing protocols for data collection and analysis, including supporting in-field data collection. Aid in the design and coordination of cross-country pilot research studies to test SEL program efficacy. Carry out any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Work Experience
Up to two years of research experience in education, experimental psychology, cognitive science, assessment, early childhood development, or any field related to SDG 4.7 is required. Professional experience within an international environment, the UN system, academia, or a governmental organization is desirable.
Skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral). Excellent IT skills, particularly in MS Office applications. Excellent coding skills in R or Python. Basic statistical knowledge and skills. Ability to work under pressure, manage heavy workloads, and meet tight deadlines with attention to detail. Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team environment.
