Consultant for Graphic Novel Development and Illustration Mangres Project
Organizational Context
This consultancy is part of the Mangrove Restoration as a Nature-Based Solution in Biosphere Reserves in Latin America (MangRes Project). The project aims to promote mangrove restoration and awareness-raising. The consultant will work under the overall supervision of the Director of Ecological and Earth Sciences and the specific supervision of the Programme Specialist for the MangRes Project.
Job Purpose
The consultant will be responsible for developing and illustrating the second volume of the MangRes graphic novel, 'Visiones del Manglar'. This includes updating the first volume's book cover according to UNESCO guidelines. Key tasks involve creating three chapters, each up to 20 pages, with illustrations depicting Latin American and Caribbean mangrove species, landscapes, and environments. The work must ensure scientific accuracy, align with educational and environmental awareness goals, and integrate approved text into the final design. The consultant will also provide print-ready and digital files, adhering to UNESCO's visual identity and publication standards, and will not use generative AI for content creation.
Responsibilities
Develop three preliminary story proposals for Volume II of the graphic novel. Create a detailed storyline and narrative structure for each of the three chapters, including schematic actions, sequences, and content. Produce illustrated mock-ups for the three chapters, integrating narrative text and sketch-level artwork. Deliver final, full-color illustrations for all three chapters, incorporating all feedback from UNESCO. Ensure scientific accuracy and alignment with the project's messaging and environmental awareness goals. Design a cohesive color palette, character designs, and artistic techniques suitable for the project. Create the layout and integrate approved text into the final design. Provide print-ready PDF files and source files for all deliverables. Comply with UNESCO Publications Guidelines, Open Access Policy, visual identity, and branding requirements.
Work Experience
A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in illustration, graphic novel, or comic production is necessary. Experience in illustration for biodiversity promotion and protection is essential. Demonstrated experience delivering print-ready files for professional publication is required. Prior experience with international organizations or UN agencies is desirable.
Skills
Proficiency in digital illustration software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is essential. Understanding of copyright, intellectual property rights, and image licensing is required. Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and prepare high-resolution, print-ready files in multiple formats is necessary.
