Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to support the Government of Nepal in preparing the Nomination Dossier for the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) to be designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. The consultant will provide expert guidance and technical assistance throughout the nomination process. This involves conducting thorough reviews of existing ecological and socio-economic data, identifying information gaps, and recommending data collection strategies. The role requires comprehensive advice on drafting the dossier in accordance with UNESCO guidelines and MAB Committee recommendations, ensuring the KCA meets the criteria for Biosphere Reserve designation. Responsibilities
The consultant will provide comprehensive guidance and technical assistance for the development of the Nomination Dossier for the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Key tasks include conducting a thorough review of existing documentation such as management plans, zoning plans, biodiversity data, and socio-economic information, and identifying any gaps. The consultant will offer expert advice in drafting the dossier according to UNESCO guidelines and MAB Committee recommendations, and evaluate the KCA's alignment with Biosphere Reserve criteria. This involves reviewing Nepal's current legal parameters for designation and providing recommendations to enhance the site's suitability. The existing management plan will be evaluated for its adherence to sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and community involvement principles. Additionally, the consultant will conduct online training sessions for Nepalese officials and stakeholders on Biosphere Reserve concepts and management, and may travel to Nepal for dossier finalization and validation.
Work Experience
A minimum of 15 years of professional experience in biodiversity and conservation planning is necessary. Prior experience in developing a UNESCO biosphere reserve dossier is a mandatory requirement for this role.
