Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in South Africa supports national development priorities aligned with the National Development Plan 2030 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Inclusive Economy and Governance portfolio focuses on shared prosperity, economic transformation, and inclusive digital and green transitions, emphasizing support for SMEs, youth, and women's economic participation.
Job Purpose
This internship supports the planning, implementation, administration, monitoring, and knowledge management of Inclusive Economy and Governance initiatives within the UNDP South Africa Country Programme Document 2026–2030. The role involves research and analysis of socio-economic trends, policy development, partner engagement, resource mobilization, SDG monitoring, and communications. The intern will contribute to evidence generation for adaptive programming, strengthening UNDP's impact on inclusive, sustainable, and resilient development in South Africa. The position aims to enhance the intern's understanding of UNDP's mandate, national development contributions, and practical skills in programme management, research, analysis, and official writing.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist in the planning, implementation, administration, monitoring, and evaluation of Inclusive Economy and Governance programmes and projects, contributing to the South Africa Country Programme Document 2026–2030. Key duties include collecting and analyzing socio-economic data related to inclusive economic transformation, job creation, and sustainable livelihoods. The role involves supporting strategy formulation, monitoring SDG progress, researching potential partners and funding opportunities, and developing concept notes. Additionally, the intern will support stakeholder engagement, event organization, and the creation of communication and knowledge management products. Tasks also include attending meetings, preparing minutes, and assisting in drafting official documents, with flexibility to undertake other related assignments.
Work Experience
Work experience is an asset but not a requirement for this internship. An understanding of Inclusive Economic Transformation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is advantageous. Prior exposure to international development, Inclusive Economic Transformation, and the South African development context is considered a significant advantage.
