Organizational Context
The Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Ankara operates 24/7, supporting the safety and security of UN personnel, premises, assets, and operations in Türkiye. It monitors and coordinates communications via the Security Communications System (SCS). This role, under the overall supervision of the D/SA and direct supervision of the SOC Associate, supports key UN functions and offers valuable experience within a diverse team.
Job Purpose
The SOC Assistant is responsible for supporting the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) with the daily operations of the Security Communications System (SCS). This involves receiving, transmitting, and relaying security messages, escalating incidents, monitoring field mission movements, and providing immediate support during security or safety events. The role also includes maintaining communication links, notifying relevant focal points, monitoring SCS usage, verifying system status, and conducting personnel headcounts. Additionally, the assistant will support radio communications, manage security-related media news, maintain contact lists, and prepare daily reports, contributing to the overall security and operational effectiveness of the UN in Türkiye.
Responsibilities
The SOC Assistant's primary duties include operational support such as relaying security messages, escalating incidents, monitoring field missions via SCS, and providing immediate assistance during security events. This involves maintaining communication links, notifying relevant parties, guiding SCS usage, verifying system functionality, and conducting personnel headcounts. The role also encompasses training UN personnel on SCS and supporting radio communications. Information management responsibilities include reporting incidents, monitoring media news for situation reports, compiling draft security information, and maintaining the Geographical Information System. Administrative duties involve maintaining staff lists, UN warden lists, emergency service contacts, and logging critical communications, alongside preparing daily reports as directed.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible work experience is required in areas such as telecommunications/radio operations, information technology, or a related field. Prior experience in the security and safety field, or with the UN system or an international NGO, is considered desirable.
Skills
Proficiency in English and Turkish (written and oral). Good knowledge of Radios and SCS equipment. Ability to assist with SCS equipment maintenance. Experience with web-based management systems and graphic information systems. Advanced computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel) and database packages. Experience in security and safety field, and with the UN system or international NGOs are desirable.
