The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kazakhstan supports the nation's "green economy" transition, aligning with Paris Agreement commitments. The Crisis Resilience unit focuses on strengthening water security, climate resilience, and sustainable natural resource management. This role operates within a growing portfolio of projects addressing environmental challenges, contributing to sustainable development and SDG achievement.
Job Purpose
This role is responsible for the management, technical coordination, and implementation of designated projects and thematic portfolios within the Energy and Environment Unit. The purpose is to ensure project results align with project documents and UNDP procedures, overseeing day-to-day management, budgeting, planning, and monitoring. The position provides strategic guidance, supports project boards, coordinates exit strategies, and facilitates capacity development for national counterparts. It plays a crucial role in advancing UNDP's environmental and climate resilience initiatives in Kazakhstan, contributing to sustainable economic development and improved environmental governance.
Responsibilities
Manage and coordinate designated projects and thematic portfolios within the Energy and Environment Unit, ensuring adherence to UNDP policies and procedures. This includes day-to-day management, budgeting, planning, and overall monitoring. Provide technical coordination and strategic guidance on natural resources, water resources, critical materials, sustainable industrial development, and circular economy. Develop Annual Work Plans and support Project Board decision-making by providing timely information and documenting actions. Coordinate project exit strategies and facilitate capacity development for national counterparts through knowledge transfer. Monitor project progress against timelines and indicators, manage risks, and ensure timely reporting to donors and stakeholders. Oversee financial monitoring and compliance. Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with government, international institutions, private sector, and civil society. Facilitate knowledge sharing, capacity building, and advocacy related to assigned thematic areas, identifying needs and organizing relevant activities.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant experience is required for candidates with a Master's degree, or four years for those with a Bachelor's degree. Experience should include managing advisory services, and/or hands-on experience in design, monitoring, and evaluation of development projects.
Skills
Proficiency in computer use, office software packages (MS Word, Excel), and web-based management systems. Advanced knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages. Experience in relevant thematic areas such as water resources management, natural resources, critical materials, mining, metallurgy, climate change, biodiversity, or circular economy. Fluency in English and Russian and/or Kazakh is required.
