The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in Mauritania is strengthening its operations by recruiting a Radio Operator. This role is crucial for enhancing the security communication capabilities within the UN system in the country, ensuring efficient operations and personnel safety.
Job Purpose
The Radio Operator will significantly bolster the UN Security System (UNSS) radio room's capacity by ensuring the optimal functioning of HF and VHF communication networks. This role is vital for the efficient monitoring of UN personnel and consultants' movements across Mauritania. The operator will report directly to the Radio Room Manager, working rotating shifts in Nouakchott to maintain continuous communication coverage and support operational security.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include maintaining the operational integrity of UNSS VHF and HF communication networks through installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications equipment. This involves ensuring proper functioning of relays and bases, managing communication quality, and documenting technical issues. The role also entails diligently tracking urban and interurban missions of UN personnel and consultants, updating mission logs, and adhering to radio contact schedules. Furthermore, the operator will facilitate communication by conducting weekly agency radio calls, disseminating security messages, and managing radio room activities, including inventory and database updates. Training new staff on radio procedures and coordinating periodic training sessions are also integral parts of the role.
Work Experience
A minimum of 4 years of professional experience is required for candidates with a secondary school diploma, or 1 year for those with a university degree. Experience in IT and Telecommunications, particularly with UN, NGO, or government telecommunication systems, is advantageous. Prior experience in military, gendarmerie, or police roles is also a plus.
Skills
Proficiency in French and Arabic is required. Knowledge of computer use and Microsoft Office Suite is an asset. Familiarity with English and local Mauritanian languages (Hassanya, Pulaar, Soninké, Wolof) is beneficial. Technical skills include knowledge of HF/VHF radio systems, telecommunications equipment installation and maintenance, and basic IT networking.
