The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global leader in fighting poverty, inequality, and climate change, working with nations to build lasting solutions. The Economist Programme provides crucial policy and programme support at the country office level, aligning with the 2030 Agenda and SDGs. This role operates within the Economics, Sustainable Finance, and Growth department, reporting to the Deputy Resident Representative.
Job Purpose
The Economist Programme provides policy and programme support on economic, development, and social issues at the country office level, aligning with the 2030 development agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Economists play a vital role by conducting research and producing analytical reports that inform decision-making on inclusive economic development, project design, and UNDP's impact assessment. The role involves advising Senior Management on economic policies and trends, providing analysis for strategy formulation, and engaging with government counterparts to enhance the policy impact of UNDP projects. The Economist also advocates for and represents UNDP in their area of expertise, potentially supervising teams and collaborating with various stakeholders to maintain networks and exchange information.
Responsibilities
Provide policy advice and support to UNDP management, programmes, and projects on economic and development issues. This includes compiling, analyzing, and interpreting economic data, conducting research on country-specific economic and development challenges, and preparing high-quality reports to promote equitable economic growth and human development. The role involves contributing to strategic documents like the Common Country Assessments and Country Programme Documents, advising on UNDP support areas, and producing economic reports, including National Human Development Reports. Additionally, the Economist will advise government counterparts, facilitate knowledge building, contribute to assessing economic policies' impact on poverty reduction and growth, and provide training. The position also entails building strategic partnerships, supporting resource mobilization, and promoting UNDP's mandate through advocacy and high-quality research.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (with a Master's degree) or 7 years (with a Bachelor's degree) is required. This experience should include extensive research and policy-level analysis, along with some experience in designing, monitoring, and evaluating development projects. Proficiency in computer software, web-based management systems, and statistical analysis is essential. Experience collaborating with UN agencies, governments, NGOs, and civil society is desired.
