SGP Programme And Communications Intern
Organizational Context
The UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji supports 10 Pacific Island Countries, including Palau, through its North Pacific Sub-Office. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) is a flagship UNDP initiative providing financial and technical support to local organizations for global environmental challenges. This internship is situated within the SGP Palau Country Programme, contributing to its local activities.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this internship is to provide practical learning opportunities and hands-on experience in programme and project management, environmental and climate initiatives, stakeholder engagement, communications, knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation, and community-based development. The intern will work closely with the SGP National Coordinator and partner organizations to support the implementation and visibility of SGP activities in Palau. This role contributes directly to the SGP Palau Country Programme's mission of supporting local communities and organizations in developing and implementing projects that foster environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and community empowerment. By assisting with initiatives in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem-based climate adaptation, sustainable natural resource management, and youth engagement, the intern will gain invaluable exposure to the operations of UNDP and the broader United Nations development system. This experience is designed to build capabilities in addressing global environmental challenges while improving local livelihoods and strengthening community resilience, aligning with UNDP's broader goals of sustainable development and leaving no one behind.
Responsibilities
The intern will provide comprehensive support across several key areas. In knowledge and data analysis, responsibilities include assisting with data collection, management, and actively contributing to knowledge management, networking, and enhancing the visibility of the SGP. This involves drafting articles and publications, ensuring proper recognition of SGP, and maintaining the SGP Global database with valid information. For communications, the intern will assist with publicity efforts, support events for effective information dissemination, and contribute to design research and implementation. In project and programme support, duties encompass assisting with event management and logistics, providing day-to-day support for programme and project implementation to ensure conformity with expected results, and aiding the National Coordinator (NC) in prescreening project concepts and proposals, including financial evaluations. The intern will also support other ad hoc activities and assist the NC in project implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, which may involve participation in field visits. Finally, technical support involves collaborating with the NC to maintain the financial integrity of the programme, assisting in implementing and monitoring the accounting system and databases for the SGP country operational budget, preparing and maintaining the grant disbursement table and calendar, tracking budget compliance, and performing administrative duties as needed.
Work Experience
A minimum of 6 months of professional experience is required, including administrative support. Desirable experience includes work in research, communications, community or volunteer initiatives, and stakeholder engagement or team collaboration.
