Organizational Context

The UN Clinic Physician operates within the UN common services team, administered by UNDP. This role provides full-time medical assistance, including consultations, emergency care, and medical evacuations for UN personnel and their dependents. The Physician manages the daily operations of the UN Clinic, overseeing staff, equipment, and stock, ensuring consistent medical service delivery. The role involves collaboration with the UN Medical Director and local UNDP office for administrative matters.

Job Purpose

The purpose of the UN Clinic Physician role is to provide essential clinical services, including medical consultations and emergency care, under the general administrative supervision of the UN Resident Coordinator and technical supervision of the UN Medical Director. The Physician will oversee medical staff, collaborate with administration to promote occupational health policies, and disseminate best practices in medical services, focusing on preventive health awareness for UN personnel and their dependents. This role is crucial in mitigating health and security risks faced by UN staff in the field, offering life-saving services and facilitating rapid recovery from trauma or illness. The Physician also actively participates in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the workplace and is an integral part of the emergency response team, working closely with security departments during crises and disasters.

Responsibilities

The UN Clinic Physician's responsibilities encompass comprehensive medical management and administrative oversight. Key clinical duties include providing full-time medical care, managing emergencies according to international protocols, performing triage and primary stabilization, and conducting daily consultations and preventive care for UN personnel and their dependents. The Physician is also responsible for recruitment and periodic medical examinations and provides on-call emergency services. Administratively, the role involves applying UN policies for medical authorizations, sick leave, and evacuations, managing related documentation, and ensuring strict confidentiality of medical records. The Physician supervises clinic staff, manages daily operations, ensures equipment functionality and supply availability, and implements medical training programs. Furthermore, the Physician coordinates UN-Care activities, including disseminating HIV/AIDS policies, organizing awareness campaigns, and planning training. Finally, the role includes active participation in medical emergency management, such as disaster simulations and disseminating health information to staff.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressive experience in general medicine in developing countries or conflict zones is required, including at least one year in traumatology and emergency care, and two years in internal medicine and hospital intensive care. Experience in surgery, medical evacuations, intensive care, and anesthesia-resuscitation is an advantage. Experience in tropical medicine and a multicultural, international, or UN environment is desirable. A certificate in HIV/AIDS management is an asset.
