Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ecuador, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Energy, is implementing the planetGOLD Ecuador project. This initiative aims to formalize artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and promote cleaner techniques to reduce mercury use. The project addresses environmental damage and social impacts associated with traditional mining practices, supporting Ecuador's commitment to the Minamata Convention.
Job Purpose
The Project Assistant will provide essential technical, operational, and territorial support for the successful implementation of the planetGOLD Ecuador project. This role is crucial for facilitating the project's strategies and activities, ensuring effective coordination with institutional, private, and community stakeholders. The assistant will contribute to reducing mercury use in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) by supporting pilot projects, promoting cleaner production alternatives, and organizing capacity-building initiatives. This position plays a key role in monitoring project progress, documenting lessons learned, and ensuring the timely delivery of project outputs, ultimately contributing to the formalization and sustainability of the ASM sector in Ecuador.
Responsibilities
Provide technical and operational support for project implementation, coordinating with local institutions, private sector, and communities to reduce mercury use in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). Facilitate communication and articulation among project stakeholders and beneficiaries. Conduct field visits for monitoring and follow-up on project activities and agreements. Support the implementation, monitoring, and documentation of pilot projects, incentives, and alternative production methods focused on cleaner processes and mercury reduction. Assist in organizing and executing awareness-raising, training, and community strengthening activities, including logistical support for workshops and events. Compile, organize, and update technical and operational information for project monitoring and reporting. Support the preparation and consolidation of project technical documents and deliverables, ensuring quality and consistency.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience is required, preferably in project support, environmental management, or community development. Experience working with artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) or in the natural resources sector is highly desirable.
