Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Service Centre for Africa (RSCA) in Addis Ababa implements a Renewed Governance and Peacebuilding Framework. This framework aims to achieve transformative change through people-centered, rights-based governance and peacebuilding systems, strengthening the social contract between state and citizens to support the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063.
Job Purpose
This internship provides graduate-level students with practical exposure to UNDP's regional work in governance, rule of law, and democratic institutions within the RSCA. The role aims to deepen understanding of democratic governance, access to justice, human rights, and electoral support in Africa. Interns will learn from experienced practitioners, apply theoretical knowledge, enhance research and analytical writing skills, contribute to knowledge products, and support regional initiatives. This dynamic opportunity allows interns to understand the UNDP mandate, contribute to people-centered governance, and engage in policy and programming that strengthens democratic resilience and inclusive institutions across the continent.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Regional Governance and Rule of Law Advisor, the intern will support regional governance and justice initiatives. Key duties include assisting with communication activities and materials for public events, web articles, and social media; conducting research on development issues; providing administrative support such as media clipping and record-keeping; supporting data collection and literature reviews on topics like Business and Human Rights, transitional justice, and electoral integrity; documenting best practices and lessons learned from African countries; preparing summaries of key events and missions; and assisting in the organization of technical workshops, regional consultations, and governance dialogues.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship's focus. Knowledge and experience in communications, public relations, or a related role is advantageous. Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, are necessary.
