The Office of the Ombudsman for United Nations Funds and Programmes provides impartial conflict resolution services for personnel of UNDP, UNICEF, UNOPS, UNFPA, and UN Women. This role supports the Mediation Unit's technology and AI-enabled initiatives, contributing to innovation within the UN's administrative justice system.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Mediation Unit's growing portfolio of technology and AI-enabled initiatives. The intern will contribute to the research, prototyping, and testing of AI-supported tools for mediation, including designing automated workflows, analyzing data, and developing UN reporting tools. The role involves exploring AI concepts like 'AI judge' prototypes and integrating generative AI into training materials and mediation support functions, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of mediation practices within the UN system.
Responsibilities
Support the development of AI tools for mediation practice by conducting research, prototyping, and testing AI-supported tools. This includes designing and automating workflows, templates, and case management processes; structuring and analyzing mediation data; and assisting in the development of UN reporting tools. Explore decision support concepts such as 'AI judge' prototypes and integrate generative AI into training materials and mediation support functions. Specific deliverables may involve creating AI systems for efficiency, preparing AI resource lists, developing AI chatbots for guidance, creating 'AI Judge' spaces based on case law, automating case management, developing case data snippets, and suggesting other AI applications for mediation and ombuds practice. Additionally, support the mediation unit's training and project activities by preparing training materials, coordinating events, and exploring AI-efficient training mechanisms.
Work Experience
Demonstrated experience or coursework in AI, automation, data analysis, and software tools is required. A strong understanding of AI tools, particularly Copilot and Gemini, is essential. Familiarity with workflow automation, data visualization, or prototyping tools is desirable. A strong interest in mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) is required. Experience with generative AI tools is an advantage, as is knowledge of ADR systems.
