Communication Intern
Organizational Context

The Communications Unit at UNDP Rwanda is pivotal for the Country Office's visibility and outreach, ensuring effective communication with partners, government, civil society, and the public, thereby contributing to Rwanda's national development goals and the SDGs.
Job Purpose
The Communication Intern will gain practical, hands-on exposure to strategic communications within an international development context at UNDP Rwanda. This role is instrumental in enhancing the Country Office's visibility, outreach, and overall positioning. The intern will actively contribute to the development and implementation of communication strategies, digital platform management, creation of advocacy products, and coordination of media engagement. Key contributions include supporting social media management, content creation, campaign planning, and logistical assistance for events. This internship aims to provide comprehensive experience in various communication facets, effectively conveying UNDP's work and impact to diverse stakeholders, aligning with Rwanda's Vision 2050, NST2, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Responsibilities
The Communication Intern will support the UNDP Rwanda Communications Unit across several key areas. Responsibilities include comprehensive social media management and content creation, involving drafting, editing, and scheduling posts for platforms like X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. This also entails daily monitoring of engagement, trends, and analytics, and organizing social media calendars to align with global and country-level campaigns. The intern will actively assist in communications campaigns and knowledge product development, which includes planning and rolling out medium-scale campaigns (e.g., thematic days, programme launches, advocacy drives). Support will also be provided for developing human-interest stories, web articles, and newsletters, and contributing to visual/multimedia content creation, such as basic photography, graphics, and short videos, in collaboration with the Communications Unit. Additionally, the role involves administrative and logistical support for event communications, including media coordination, live social media coverage, and general logistics. Maintaining communications databases, photo libraries, and archives, along with providing general administrative assistance like meeting notes and procurement requests, are also key duties. Finally, the intern will support other ad-hoc communications-related activities, such as research, partner visibility, and internal communications, as relevant and needed.
Work Experience
No specific prior work experience is explicitly required for this internship. The role is designed to provide hands-on exposure to strategic communications in an international development context, encompassing content creation, social media management, campaign design, event communications, and stakeholder engagement.
Skills
Required skills include proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and familiarity with digital and social media platforms (X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube). Basic graphic design, video editing, or digital content creation skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) are an asset. Fluency in English is mandatory, with French and/or Kinyarwanda being strong assets. Key competencies include analytical skills, initiative, effective communication, strong organizational abilities, cultural sensitivity, adaptability, and a positive, constructive attitude.
