Organizational Context
The UNDP's RENACE project, funded by the Government of Canada, aims to enhance climate change adaptation and socio-ecological resilience in Peru's Amazon region, specifically Padre Abad. The project addresses climate threats exacerbated by unsustainable land use, leading to deforestation and increased forest fires. It integrates inclusive territorial governance, climate-smart agricultural practices, and nature-based solutions, supported by innovative financing mechanisms.
Job Purpose
The Technical Assistant for Silvopastoral Systems will provide crucial technical and operational support for the field implementation of sustainable livestock practices within the RENACE project. This role directly contributes to the adoption of resilient production systems and the reduction of forest fire risks in the Amazon region. By assisting producers in adopting sustainable and climate-resilient practices, the position plays a key part in promoting improved livestock productivity without expanding agricultural frontiers, fostering a more sustainable and secure environment for local communities and ecosystems.
Responsibilities
The Technical Assistant will support the field implementation of sustainable livestock and silvopastoral practices, including pasture management and degraded area rehabilitation. This involves providing direct technical assistance to producers for adopting climate-resilient practices, accompanying demonstration plots, and adapting technical packages to local conditions. The role includes supporting continuous technical assistance, organizing training sessions, and applying participatory methodologies with intercultural and gender-sensitive approaches. Responsibilities also extend to integrating livestock practices with agricultural and agroforestry systems, promoting fire prevention through sustainable livestock management, and collecting field data for monitoring and reporting. Additionally, the assistant will coordinate with local stakeholders and support the systematization of project knowledge and best practices.
Work Experience
A minimum of 4 years of work experience in activities related to agricultural production, sustainable livestock practices, silvopastoral systems, or livestock management is required for candidates with a secondary education. For those with a Bachelor's degree or higher, 1 year of relevant experience is sufficient. Experience in field work, engaging with producers, and in training/technical assistance processes is essential. Desired experience includes 2+ years in rural development, sustainable production systems, extension, direct work with rural producers, the Peruvian Amazon, GIS, and participatory processes.
Skills
